During 40 years counselling patients with Spiritually Transformative Experiences, Dr. Yvonne Kason MD noticed that there are definite psycho-spiritual stages over the years on the spiritual path. “Purifying the Heart” is a multifaith model for these stages, based on the model described by Swami Sri Yukteswar, in The Holy Science, written in 1894. These consecutive stages are: the Dark Heart, the Propelled Heart, the Steady Heart, the Devoted Heart and the Clean Heart. Dr. Kason will describes the focus and tasks of each stage on the spiritual path.
Using her own life as a case example, she describes her 5 Near-Death Experiences and a “calling” mystical experience and shows how they shifted her onto the next stage of purifying the heart. She concludes that the long-term goal of every spiritual seeker, no matter what religious tradition or spiritual path they are following, is to purify the heart, to reach the clean-heart stage, where they can experience deep and ongoing personal communion with God/ our Higher Power/ Consciousness behind the universe, while fully functioning in the world. They can thus become clear instruments of the Light and Love of Divine Will on the planet.
Dr. Yvonne Kason MD, MEd, CCFP, FCFP, is the President and Co-Founder of Spiritual Awakenings International. A retired Family Physician and MD Transpersonal Psychotherapist, she was previously on faculty at the University of Toronto. She is the Co-Leader of Toronto Awakenings Sharing Group, and the Past-President of IANDS. A pioneer in the field of spirituality in healthcare, in 2000 she co-founded then chaired the Spirituality in Health-Care Network, and in 1990 she co-founded the Kundalini Research Network.
Dr. Kason is the person who first coined the phrase “Spiritually Transformative Experiences” in 1994.
Dr. Yvonne Kason has had 5 Near-Death Experiences and multiple STEs herself. She is an internationally renowned medical expert on Near-Death Experiences, (NDEs) Kundalini Awakening, and Spiritually Transformative Experiences (STEs). Dr. Kason is in demand as a media resource, has given hundreds of professional presentations, and has appeared on many television, radio, and online podcasts and shows.
Dr. Kason has 5 books, her latest, Touched by the Light: (Dundurn Press, 2019), which is a synthesis of her personal experiences, her clinical experience counselling hundreds of STE Experiencers, and her 40 years of research on STEs and their profound after-effects on the body, mind, and spirit.
